About the artist
Kate Maura creates lyrical abstract works as a mixed media based in Toronto. Her works conceptually speak to transformation and crossing other worlds. Her process considers transforming analogue into digital and then painting, a 3 step, process where the work is transformed at each stage. Kate calls this process synthesis artwhich speaks to how she sees the works anew at each stage, a witness to how she has transformed seeing new relationships of colours, forms and line. A reflection of the interconnectedness of things. Her focus is on unusual forms she finds that are not representative of any particular subject, and so feel organic yet open to interpretation to the viewer. Nature is the first step where she draws the interrelationships of many elements and informs her colour choices.
Finding inspiration in the natural world, Kate grew up with a close relationship to nature, spending time at the family farm as well each summer at a canoe tripping camp in Algonquin Park. Blending her plein air drawings with digitization and painting, her work is a unique mixed media. Combining historical with more contemporary ways of making speaks to the importance of learning about history and current ways of thinking, in order to gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, a reflection on how we change and transform. Change is certain and can be something very beautiful, and her imagery reflects a sense of forms changing and becoming.
“There is an unseen life that dreams us, it knows our true direction and destiny, we can trust ourselves more than we realize and, we need have no fear of change.”
(John Odonohue scholar and poet).
